Accepting Applications for Full-Time Firefighter/EMT Positions

Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department is now accepting applications for full-time Firefighter/EMT positions. The department is seeking motivated individuals who are committed to serving others, working as part of a team, and supporting the residents and visitors of the Broad River community.

Broad River VFD is a combination career and volunteer department serving a rural area of Buncombe County near the McDowell, Henderson, and Rutherford county lines. The department operates from three stations and responds to a wide range of calls, including emergency medical incidents, fires, motor vehicle crashes, woods fires, searches, and other emergency and public service calls.

Full-time personnel will work 48/96 shifts and assist with emergency response, daily truck and equipment inspections, general building maintenance, basic data entry, and other assigned duties. Broad River VFD also operates a state-of-the-art unmanned aircraft system drone program and places a strong emphasis on proactive service to the community, including helping residents prepare ahead of expected events when possible.

Starting salary for full-time positions is $58,000 to $62,000. Benefits include employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance after 30 days, life insurance, critical illness insurance, supplemental accident sickness insurance, AFLAC, paid vacation and sick time, employer-paid NC FRSW Pension Fund after probation, and a 401(k) beginning at 7% employer contribution after one year.

Minimum requirements include being at least 21 years old, having a valid North Carolina driver’s license, Firefighter II and EMT-B certification, and ICS/NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800. Applicants must also have Driver Operator EVD or obtain it within one year, and Wildland S-130, S-190, and L-180 or obtain them within six months. A 90-day probationary period applies.

Hiring is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
