Hi, Kids!

Welcome to our Fire Safety Zone! The firefighters and emergency medical technicians at Broad River Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department are here to help keep our community safe. Learning about fire safety is one of the best ways you can help protect yourself, your family, and your friends.

Remember - firefighters aren't just here during emergencies. We're also your friends and neighbors, and we're always happy to answer questions and teach you about staying safe.

Know Your Home

Every family should have a fire escape plan.

Talk with your parents or guardians about:

• Two ways out of every room

• A safe meeting place outside your home

• How to call 9-1-1 in an emergency

• Never going back inside a burning building

Practice your family's escape plan at least twice each year.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Smoke alarms give your family an early warning if there is a fire.

Make sure your home has smoke alarms:

• Inside every bedroom

• Outside sleeping areas

• On every level of your home

Ask an adult to test smoke alarms every month and replace the batteries as recommended.

If Your Clothes Catch Fire

Remember these three important words:

STOP!

Don't run.

DROP!

Get down on the ground.

ROLL!

Roll back and forth until the flames are out.

Then tell an adult right away.

Crawl Low Under Smoke

Smoke rises!

If there is smoke in your home:

• Get down low.

• Crawl on your hands and knees.

• Head for the nearest safe exit.

Clean air is closer to the floor.

Know When to Call 9-1-1

Call 9-1-1 if there is:

• A fire

• Someone who is hurt or very sick

• A car crash

• A dangerous emergency

Stay calm, speak clearly, and tell the dispatcher:

• Your address

• What happened

• Your name

Only call 9-1-1 for real emergencies.

Be a Kitchen Safety Helper

Kids can help keep the kitchen safe by:

• Staying at least 3 feet away from the stove while someone is cooking.

• Never touching hot pots or pans.

• Asking an adult before using the microwave or oven.

Matches and Lighters Are Tools - Not Toys

If you find matches or a lighter:

Don't touch them!

Tell an adult immediately.

Meet a Firefighter

Firefighters wear special protective clothing and breathing equipment to keep them safe while helping others.

If you ever see a firefighter wearing all of their gear, don't be scared - they're there to help you.

If you're at home during a fire:

• Stay where you are if you cannot get out safely.

• Call for help.

• Listen to the firefighter's instructions.
