Reminder: Road Closures in Our Area

July 12, 2026

Residents and visitors are reminded of two road closures that may affect travel and emergency response routes in our area.

NC 9 Closure
NC 9 between Shumont Road and Mt. Tabor Road is scheduled to be closed nightly from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. beginning tonight. The closure is expected to take place July 12 through July 23, Sunday through Thursday nights.

Old Fort Road / Bat Cave Road Closure
Old Fort Road/Bat Cave Road remains closed near 2363 Old Fort Road, near Stone Mountain Baptist Church. Based on the information provided to us, access to Major Mountain Road should remain available from the NC 9 side, but travel will not be permitted beyond that point.

Broad River Fire Department has notified bordering counties and has requested that Buncombe County do the same for any emergency response needs beyond the closure toward the McDowell and Rutherford County side.

Our department will continue to respond to all emergency calls in the affected area. However, the closure may require a lengthy detour for some responses. We have also been advised that residents between Stone Mountain Baptist Church and NC 9 will still be able to access their homes.

Closure signage will likely be posted at NC 9 and Old Fort Road.

We will share updates if any of this information changes. Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use caution when traveling near closure areas.
